Growing up in New York City, Clark had early connections with major media. He began working in commercial radio as a teenager at WBIS, Bristol, CT. Clark received a full scholarship for building 3kw stereo WWUH-FM while earning his B.A. in speech and psychology at the University of Hartford, also working at Connecticut radio and TV stations WPOP, WCCC, TV/30 (NBC) and TV/18 (RKO General).

Moving to Boston Clark converted Boston University's 20kw WBUR-FM to stereo as Asstistant General Manager & Program Director, then moving to Westinghouse powerhouse WBZ Radio, as Operations Director.

Clark started the formats at WBZ-FM (Top 40) and introduced the legendary WCOZ-FM (AOR) for Blair Radio/WHDH, Boston.

As Director of Programming & Promotion at CBS Owned WEEI-FM, Boston, Clark created Mass Appeal Adult Album (Triple A) and was the first to use the positioning handle "Softrock", in 1977.

WEEI-FM recorded a record ARBitron 5.1 share 12+, ranked Top 4 in all prime demos and became the 3rd highest billing station for the CBS/FM station group, behind only New York and L.A.

WEEI/FM featured the award winning ad campaign for outdoor, TV and print: "The Eagles. Without the turkeys." "Joni. Without the baloni." etc.

After leaving CBS in '81, Clark established the consulting service:

Thoughout the 90's Clark served as Broadcast Advisor to WMUR-TV/9, (ABC) Manchester, NH and, in 1995, began simulcasting the Channel 9 Television News on WNNH Oldies 99 Radio, a technique now used by major operators.

Clark Broadcasting sold full service WNNH to Tele-Media, in 2000. Clark Smidt stayed on as Regional Market General Manager running Boston ADI stations WNNH (Oldies), WLKZ-FM, Laconia (Classic Hits) and WHOB-FM, Nashua (Hot A/C).
