Here's the text from the insert on the right (by
Galaxy Communications CEO Ed Levine).
You weren't a big fan
of consultants?
We eventually did start to work with independent consultants over the
years but, generally, we didn't have a lot of use for them. Frankly,
I don't have a lot of use for them now. I had an AC station - WZUN
- that was struggling, and I brought in three of the top AC consultants
by reputation over a three-year period. I handed them a radio station
with bad ratings and three years later I got a radio station
with disastrous ratings. I hired a small independent guy that I had
known for a long time, Clark Smidt, who's done some work in Boston
very successfully over the years. Clark had this vision of where the
AC
hole in the market was. A year later we have a three-and-a-half share
and probably the hotest radio station in Syracuse right now. Having
been a consultant I can say there are a lot of very smart guys, but
when you get to the second and third teams, they have a formula. As
much as they say, "We're going to listen to the market," my experience
is that they're going to listen to the market and then adhere to the
formula. The more I've seen it over the last 25 years, the more I think
that is true.
